Pontiac, Michigan, 01, November 2014: Hailing from Michigan, the home of Motown, Ronnie Overton has been a staple in the city’s music industry for more than 40 years. As a performing bassist, he has played for legendary artist Ronnie McNeir and Kim Weston, as well as serving as the band director for the Del-Vikings. Overton’s musical resume spans countless genres and generations, each piece lending to his diverse solo style. Described by many as a modern take on the classic Motown sound, Overton’s unique style of music is a must-have for any jazz collection.
Perhaps what makes Overton’s latest album, “Mind Therapy” so brilliant, is its consistency. Each track, while offering different elements of jazz, R&B and Motown, remains consistently locked into a stable vibe. The album has the ability to maintain a steady grove, while encompassing numerous jazz elements, changing tempo, and creating an atmosphere that is predictable and frenetic all at once.
Recorded in a home studio using Sonar, “Mind Therapy” maintains a raw sound in tandem with its polished presentation and airtight engineering. Upon first listen, it becomes clear that “Mind Therapy” could only have been produced by a musician with extensive training and years of experience in the gritty scene of Detroit’s underground music industry.
Currently available through CD Baby, the 14-track masterpiece that is “Mind Therapy” offers more than an hour of mellow, soulful music full of positive vibes and stunning arrangements. In celebration of his latest release, Overton will also appear at countless gigs throughout Motown and surrounding areas to promote his unique, yet familiar sound.
